best waterfalls hike on oahu?
-for public viewing. no trespassing or private properties.
provide links if possible.. thanks!
Here are my picks:
1. Manoa Falls. This is right in back of Honolulu up the Koolau Mountains. From University Ave or Punahou, drive towards the mountains (“mauka”), and onto Manoa Ave (make sure it is not East Manoa which runs along the other side of Manoa Valley). Go to the very back. This is a relatively short hike. You pass bamboo forests, giant ferns, and so forth to the tallest waterfall on the island with a little pool underneath.
2. Maunawili Falls. This is in back of Kailua along the Koolaus. This hike borders on “moderate”, crossing the stream four times, up and down hill, some stairs. At the end is a fairly large waterfall volume-wise with a fantastic pool out of the movies, in a little lava rock canyon, surrounded by giant ferns. A lot of people climb the rocks near the falls and jump in. The vegetation is not as luxurious as on the way to Manoa Falls, but still very interesting.
Hiking in the tropical jungle is a bit more treacherous than in a temperate climate: muddy and slippery so wear Tevas or strong/sturdy flip-flops that fit your feet well. Wear repellent.
There will be signs posted near many of them to not go in the water. This is because there could be a parasite (leptospirosis) in the water, so you go in at your own risk (try not to swallow any water if you do!).
3. If you don’t want the risk of slipping in the mud or the grime associated with hiking in the humid jungle, you can “hike” to Waimea Falls, in North Shore, in back of Waimea Beach (near Sunset Beach). This used to be a for-fee “amusement” park with themed drives and shows. It is derelict now, and owned by the Audobon Society, but the falls in the very back are still spectacular, and you have the benefit that the old roads are still intact.
There WAS another fantastic tropical waterfall hike on the windward side (Sacred Falls), but a landslide and fatal accident has closed the trail.
