What wood should I use for a walking stick?

I want to spend a long time and carve a quality walking stick, because I backpack and hike and I’m in the woods alot. What wood should I use for the stick, considering that I’m limmited to what I can go out and cut down in Illinois? The wood should be hard and durable, but not extremely hard to carve.

My grandfather told me; hickory, white oak or ash. Better to be a bit longer than not long enough. Hickory is the heaviest and hardest. Ash is the lightest and softest. White oak is in between and probably will work as a reasonable compromise.
