Anybody who has hiked Yosemite’s Half Dome. A few questions…?

We will be hiking half dome July 5th. I was wondering what time would we need to start and where to park? It will be round trip. I know its a steep climb and there are cables to hang onto…will we need gloves? Also, how much water and snacks will we need to take? Any other tips and what we need to know before we do this beautiful monster would be welcomed lol.

Start at Happy Isles on the John Muir trail past Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls .It is 8 miles one way, so you need to start before dawn if you plan to do it in one day. The hike up the switchbacks is grueling to the Little Yosemite Valley. It is much nicer to stay the night there if you can, and do the hike in 2 days. But if not head up through the trees for 4 miles up the Half Dome Trail and to the cables. Gloves are nice, but not required. You should have a pair because it will be cold in the early morning. There are wooden slats every 3 feet to place your feet, and the steel cables to hold onto. If you have to rest,be sure to stay out of the way of other climbers. There is little opportunity to purify water, so you need at least 1 gallon per person if you can’t filtrate. at rivulets. With the low rain, they may all be dry this year. Also layer: two shirts minimum, coat, hat, sun glasses, long and short pants good hiking boots, not tennis shoes, 4000 calories minimum of high density food: power bars, proteins, carbs, and sugars. Do not skimp on food or water, or you will never make it. Been there 4 times. Always a great hike.
